American Airlines cancelled more than 1,400 flights over the weekend due to unfavourable weather and staff shortages.

The company disclosed in a statement that it expects to get through this period of irregular operations as soon as carriers hire more employees as the world heads towards the busy holiday travel season.

The Airlines said it is increasing its staff across all operations, with nearly 1,800 flight attendants returning from leave and more than 600 newly hired flight attendants expected to come on board by the end of December.
