The Austrian government has threatened to lock down unvaccinated persons and make them face an uncomfortable winter and Christmas season. This threat came up in the wake of a surge in Covid-19 cases in recent days.

Austria recorded an average of about 9,100 new cases within seven days. The seven day average of Covid deaths also increased by roughly 60 per cent within the same period.

Austria’s new case count has doubled in number compared with her two neighbours, Germany and Switzerland.

Earlier this week, Austria began to tighten some restrictions, requesting proof of vaccination or evidence of recent covid-19 recovery from people before they are allowed to enter public events with 25 or more people, hairdressers, hotels and entertainment venues.
