An ex-deputy speaker of Malawi’s parliament, Clement Chiwaya, has reportedly committed suicide inside the country’s parliament building in the capital, Lilongwe. His death was confirmed and disclosed by a police spokesman.

Chiwaya who gained access into the parliament building, despite routine security checks, shot himself in the head after sneaking a firearm into the office of the clerk.

Ian Mwenye, the assistant clerk of the parliament could not immediately confirm Chinwaya’s purpose for visiting the clerk’s office but earlier statement made by the parliament pointed at the ongoing tussle between Chiwaya and the parliament over benefits and entitlements.

As at the time of the incidence, there was an outstanding case in court with respect to his vehicle which was involved in an accident while transfer of ownership had not been completed and the insurance had expired.

Chiwaya, had served three consecutive terms as a member of parliament from 2004 to 2019.
