The Federal Government, in the course of the previous year, realized a sum of N8.6 trillion as taxes for the year.

This was contained in a data released by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). The data stated that both agencies generated N2.2 trillion and N6.4 trillion each in the course of the year.

While giving the figure at a public presentation and breakdown of the 2022 Appropriation Act, the Executive Chairman, FIRS, Muhammad Nami, stated that 70% of the target set for 2021 taxes were gathered with the help of technology. He added that Nigeria will do better in the new year.

The NCS also stated that it had a target of N1.6 trillion for the year, but surpassed it by generating N2.2 trilllion.

The NCS Public Relations Officer, Comptroller Joseph O. Attah, stated in a statement that the amount generated was a 43% increase on the N1.5 trillion generated in 2020.

Similarly, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali (Rtd), expressed delight over the feat. He expressed further that this was a result of a resolute pursuit of what is right and the willingness to adapt to changes brought about by global health challenges occasioned by covid-19.
