Following the discovery of a mangled body of a dead man on Runway 18R at the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, the airport has been temporarily shut down.

As at press time, investigations are still ongoing as regards the identity of the corpse and the cause of death, it is however assumed that the man may have been knocked down by an airplane taking off or another landing on the runway.

However, officials from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and the Nigeria Police Force have removed the corpse from the runway.

The incident has been described as a major security breach by an aviation security expert and former Military Commandant of the MMIA, Group Captain John Ojikutu (retd). He added there was a great need to investigate how the unidentified man got into the sensitive area of the airport.

He further added that the perimeter fence of the MMIA is not a security fence, which has exposed the airport to various security breaches.
