In a bid to carry out the installation of Runway Airfield Lighting at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria(FAAN) has reached a decision to shut down the 2.7km 18L/36R domestic runway. Since its rehabilitation in 2008, the runway has been without Airfield Lighting.

It would be recalled that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) had In March 2022, approved the sum of N3,523,592,079 for safety-critical projects for the Ministry of Aviation.

The Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, had stated that the sum of N2,329,961,099.60 would be deducted for the supply and installation of airfield ground lighting for Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, and Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano.

The runway would be closed to domestic flights from Thursday, 7th July, 2022, ahead of commencement of the project, while flight operations will make use of the international runway – Runway 18R/36L.
