A Judicial Panel set up by the Lagos state government to investigate the alleged Lekki Toll Gate shootings have concluded its sitting. The panel in its conclusion stated that the 2020 Lekki toll gate shootings in Lagos could be regarded as a massacre and lethal violence committed by Nigeria’s military.

The report which, took more than a year to produce, accused the Nigerian Army of killing young people who were protesting peacefully against police brutality while waving the Nigerian flag and singing the national anthem.

The panel described the killings as a massacre. It found the Nigerian army guilty of not adhering to its Rules of Engagement and also berated them for refusing to allow ambulances to render medical assistance to victims who require such services.

On the occassion of the one year anniversary of the shooting on the 20th of last month, Nigeria’s Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed had described the incident as a phantom massacre and dismissed all investigations into the matter as fake.
