The Philippines is one of the top producers of coconut and coconut products in the world. Every year, an estimated nine billion husks are burned or left in the field where they can take years to biodegrade.

Fortuna Cools saw an opportunity to use these abundant source of waste to make durable coolers and went ahead to develop a technology to turn them into durable insulated coolers. First, the husks are broken into fibres, air-dried and then pressed into thick boards that make up the box lid and sides.

With this new technology, the company does not only provide products for use but also provides an extra source of income to the local coconut farmers it works with.

According to the company, each box costs around $20 which is two to three times the price of Polystyrene coolers but the box lasts longer.
