The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics(ASUP) has announced that it will commence a two-week warning strike from Monday 16th May, 2022.

The union made the disclosure in a statement signed by its National President, Anderson Ezeibe, after an emergency National Executive Council meeting.

Ezeibe, blamed the decision on the refusal of the federal government to meet ASUP’s demand which includes the release of the approved revitalization fund for the sector, eleven months after its approval by the President

The statement titled, ‘Status Update of the ASUP / Federal Government of Nigeria Engagement; and Resolutions of the Emergency National Executive Council Meeting of ASUP’ stated that the union had declared an industrial action on the 6th of April 2021 and suspended it on the 10th of June, 2021, following the signing of a Memorandum of Action (MoA) with the government.

ASUP stated that it suspended the industrial action for a period of three months “to enable the government conclude processes already initiated in the direction of fulfilment of the items in the MoA which are process-led.”

The union expressed that after nine months of suspending the strike, it met to evaluate the government’s response to the MoA, and gave the government a one-month ultimatum. However, the government did not honour its agreement with the union.

The union further appealed to members of the public to prevail on the government to do the needful within the two weeks period so as to avoid an indefinite shutdown of the sector.
