Japanese electronics giant, Sony, has announced it is teaming up with one of the world’s largest automaker, Honda to start a new company that will develop and sell electric vehicles.

The electronics giant disclosed this on Friday, as its latest step into the rapidly growing EV sector, as major global carmakers are increasingly prioritising electric and hybrid vehicles as concerns about climate change grows.

Sony Group said in a statement on Friday that the two Japanese companies hope to establish their firm by the end of the year, calling it “a strategic alliance”.

In a statement released by Sony Group, it stated that this alliance aims to realize a new generation of mobility and services that are closely aligned with users and the environment.

Sale of their first electric models are expected to begin in 2025, with Honda responsible for its manufacturing but both companies working on design, technology and sales.

Sony Group President, Kenichiro Yoshida, stated that although Sony and Honda companies share many historical and cultural similarities, their areas of technological expertise are very different.

He further expressed his believe that the alliance which brings together the strengths of both companies will offer great possibilities for the future of mobility.

Meanwhile, other auto companies, Nissan and Toyota are also investing heavily into the EV sector.

Recently, Toyota hiked its 2030 electric vehicle sales goal by 75 percent in a more ambitious plan for the sector, while Nissan auto alliance also promised to offer 35 new electric models to the market by 2030 as it announced a total investment of $25 billion into the sector.
