Figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics has revealed that contributions from the Infomation and Communication sector to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) decreased by 9% from N3.1tn in the fourth quarter of 2021 to N2.81tn in the first quarter of 2022.

According to the figures, the ICT sector contributed 15.21% and 16.20% to real GDP in Q4 2021 and Q1 2022.

It also revealed that as at Q4 2021, total GDP was N20.33tn and N17.35tn in Q1 2022.

The ICT sector, according to the NBS, covers the activities of the telecommunications and information services such as publishing, motion picture, sound recording, music production and broadcasting.

Data obtained has revealed that the telecommunication and information services contributed 79.88%, estimated at N2.25tn, of the total contribution of the sector in Q1 2022 and 82.89% (N2.56tn) of the total contribution of the sector in Q4 2021.

The NBS, while speaking on Q4 2021, stated that the telecommunication sector contributed 15.21% in 2021 fourth quarter, higher than in the same quarter of the previous year in which it represented 15.06% and higher than the preceding quarter in which it represented 14.20%.

The statistics further disclosed that the gross output for the telecommunication and information services subsector is gotten from revenue from telephone, telex, facsimile, telegraph, and other income from satellite and internet services.
