Dutch border police have arrested a couple who fled the quarantine hotel where Covid positive passengers from South Africa in-bound flights were quarantined.

The couple were arrested on an aeroplane that was about to take off at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport. The police did not disclose their names and identities but it was revealed that they were trying to fly to Spain.

According to the Public health authority’s spokesperson, Stefanie Van Waardenburg, one of the couple had tested positive and sent into isolation, while the other person tested negative and was sent into quarantine. She added that both were sent back into isolation but not to the same hotel.

The couple were turned over to the health authorities and they are liable for prosecution for breaching Dutch quarantine rules.

On Friday, 61 people who arrived on two flights at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport had tested positive for coronavirus, 13 of them with the new Omicron variant.
