McDonald has opened its first UK net zero carbon restaurant both in its building construction as well as everyday operations.

The restaurant is powered by renewable energy from two wind turbines and 92 square metres of solar panels, and has walls insulated with British sheep wool.

The building’s cladding is made from recycled IT equipment and white household goods, amounting to 250 square metres of materials.

A spokesperson for McDonald’s said that the restaurant is one of many business actions the company has in stock, including its ambitious sustainability plan to achieve zero emissions across the entire UK and Ireland’s business and value chain by 2040.

The fast food giant said it plans to use the blueprint to achieve net zero emissions in all its 1,400 restaurants and offices by 2030.

McDonald’s Vice President of Supply Chain and Brand Trust, Beth Hart, said that the food giant believes that food needs to be served in restaurants that are sustainable for the future.
