Nigeria’s Telecommunication companies have proposed to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) a 40% increase in the cost of calls, SMS and data. This was hinged on persistent rising inflation in the country which has impacted negatively on cost of production as well as operational costs.

The proposal was revealed in a letter written by the telecommunications companies under the aegis of Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria to the NCC titled ‘Impact of the Economic and Security Issues on the Telecommunications Sector.’

The proposal stated that the price floor of calls will rise to N8.95 as against its initial price of N6.4 while the price cap of SMS will also increase from N4 to N5.61.

The letter reveals that the telecom companies claimed there had been an increase of 40% in the cost of doing business across the nation.

The Telcos stated further that the telecommunication industry has been strongly affected financially by the nation’s economic recession in 2020 and the effect of the ongoing Ukraine/Russia crisis.
