The 5G or fifth generation spectrum is a technology that allows a wave of fast mobile broadband networks which offers incredible download speed of 20GB/ second as against 1GB/ second on a 4G network.

5G networks could run on the 3.4GHz, 3.5GHz and 3.6GHz spectrum band but airwaves in the 3.5GHz band is considered ideal for the first wave of 5G. The millimetre wave spectrum will also play a vital role in the 5G networks.

The 5G network will deliver data with less than a millisecond (ms) of delay, compared to about 70ms on a 4G network. A 5G user will be able to download a 3hour HD movie under a second on his smart phone and video buffering during a streaming virtually disappear as data transmission happens at a very fast speed. It’s like having a fibre optic connection in your pocket anywhere you go.

Experts believe that the 5G technology will be a gateway for a truly connected society. It is slated to power a host of new-age services such as machine to machine (M2M) communications, connected smart cities and even self-driving cars.
