Students of the University of Benin on Monday grounded activities at the Federal Secretariat in Benin, Edo state, over the ongoing strike action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU).

Foster Amadin, President of the institution’s Student Government, expressed that the students have decided to express their grievances by shutting the Federal Government offices in the state so as to convey their demand for the resolution of the crisis.

The students were reported to have blocked the gates of the secretariat and asked the workers to return home.

Amadin stated that education has been taken to an unserious level and the Federal Government is busy with the election, forgetting the fact that there are many students at home due to the ASUU strike, he added.

He reiterated that all the Federal offices in the state would be shut down, noting that a letter has been written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state to inform them that election will not hold in Edo until students return to classes.

The SUG President further appealed to those concerned to step in and find a lasting solution to the crisis.
