A South African doctor, Angelique Coetzee, who initially warned of the new Covid strain has described the new omicron variant’s symptoms as “extremely mild”.

Dr Coetzee reports that patients had started to show unusual symptoms which differs in some ways from those associated with the delta variant.

She disclosed further that the symptoms range from being extremely tired to body aches and pains with a bit of headache. This conclusion was reached after taking out samples and carrying out series of tests on some patients.

She disclosed further that the patients did not experience sore throat as such but had more of a scratchy throat without cough. They also experienced loss of taste or smell, as is the case with the delta variant.

Coetzee’s observations and conclusions however, are based on a small number of cases.

Magaret Harris, spokesperson for the World Health Organisation (WHO), stated that South Africa should be highly commended and appreciated for raising the alarm over the new omicron variant, noting that its symptoms had already manifested in countries like the U.K., Belgium, France, Israel, France, Germany, the Nertherlands, Canada, Hong Kong, Australia and Italy.

The new variant is however, yet to be observed in the U.S.
